Memory loss might be the most common symptom of dementia – but it’s not the only one. This Remember December, Dementia New Zealand invites Kiwis across the country to learn more about identifying the signs and symptoms of dementia. Let’s ensure that every Kiwi with dementia can access the free support they need to live well with dementia.

Common signs and symptoms of dementia:

Forgetting what you ate for breakfast last week isn’t anything to worry about – but if a loved one starts forgetting what they ate for breakfast 15 minutes ago, there may be cause for concern. Repeating a story to your spouse because you forgot you had already shared it is a normal part of any relationship – but if your husband repeats the same story ten times in a day, taking him to see your GP is in order. Forgetfulness is a normal part of life – but memory loss isn’t.

Some of the most common symptoms of dementia include:

  • Poor short-term memory
  • Inability to carry out common tasks, such as preparing a meal
  • Personality changes
  • Struggling to follow conversations
  • Becoming depressed or withdrawn
  • Difficulty with abstract thinking
  • Poor judgement
  • Disorientation with time and place

Early diagnosis, and the corresponding support that becomes available with a diagnosis, is vital. It can slow the progression of dementia and maximises independence and wellbeing.
