Building community one step at a time

Building community one step at a time

When actress Fleur Saville returned home to Aotearoa after 13 years in Los Angeles, to be close to Mystics who changed her life in such a profound way – she brought with her a renewed sense of purpose – to build community, give back and support those facing challenges that too often go unseen.

Now based in Mission Bay, Fleur has launched a grassroots running group with a simple aim: to bring people together, one Sunday at a time, while raising funds for Dementia Auckland.

Inspired by a similar group she belonged to in Los Angeles (the Soho House Run Club led by dear friend and mental health advocate Raymond Braun), Fleur saw firsthand how small, regular gatherings could create big impacts – not just for fitness, but for connection and creating a genuine sense of belonging.

The cause is personal. Fleur’s partner is the full-time carer for his mother, who lives with dementia | mate wareware. Over the last year, her respect for the dementia journey has grown from seeing her partner’s quiet, unwavering care for his mother and the many small acts of love it demands.

“It’s hard to imagine the load until you see it up close,” Fleur says. “I’m in awe of the way he cares for his mum. And I want him, and families like his, to know that they’re not alone.”

The Mission Bay run club meets every Sunday at 9.30am, starting near the beachfront. A $5 koha per runner is collected, with all proceeds going to Dementia Auckland to support vital services for people living with dementia and their whānau. A Strava link makes it easy for runners of all levels to track their progress and stay connected, even if they can’t make it every week.

For Fleur, it’s not about running fast or far – it’s about turning up, moving forward, and making a difference.

“It’s not a race. It’s a gathering. It’s about community, kindness, and showing up for each other – in small ways that add up to something much bigger.”

Everyone is welcome – walkers, runners, beginners, and seasoned athletes alike.

As Fleur puts it: “If you can put one foot in front of the other, you can be part of this. If you show up for yourself and others, and give back, it’s a great way to start a Sunday! And ocean views? What a way to start a Sunday morning.”
