Building for the Future: Dementia Hawkes Bay’s Renovations in Full Swing
At Dementia Hawke’s Bay, we’re always looking ahead – not just in the way we support people living with dementia | mate wareware, but in the spaces we deliver that support. Over the past few months, all three of our day programme buildings – Mahana, Huia, and Tūī – have been undergoing upgrades to make them safer, more comfortable, and better suited to the people we serve.
Mahana – Keeping Warm and Dry
In Napier, Mahana is getting a long-awaited new roof. After years of patch jobs and leaky ceilings, this upgrade means people using the space can feel safe, warm and cared for – every day.
Huia – Outdoor Space, Year-Round
Huia House in Hastings now features a bigger deck with a covered Archgola, making it a great space for group activities or quiet time, no matter the weather. The team are adding outdoor heating and custom blinds this winter to make sure it’s comfortable all year round.
Tūī – Big Renovation, Big Vision
Tūī House is getting a major refresh, including purpose-designed rooms that will let more people take part in the Active Brain Programme. Solar panels are also being installed as part of Dementia Hawkes Bay’s sustainability efforts. These changes will help support independence, connection and wellbeing.
A Kitchen That Works for Everyone
In the Workshop That Makes Mistakes – the creative hub of the Active Brain Programme – upgrades to the kitchen are underway to make it more welcoming and accessible. It’s a small change with a big impact, helping turn mealtimes into another moment of care, connection and inclusion.
More Than Bricks and Mortar
All these improvements reflect our overarching purpose: To create an inclusive future where all people affected by dementia mate wareware can live their best lives in their community.
Each upgrade aligns with our organisational objectives:
• We’re meeting people where they are by creating flexible, safe, and welcoming spaces.
• We’re strengthening relationships – with clients, families, funders, and supporters – who share in this vision.
• We’re planning for the future by making sure our facilities are financially, operationally, and environmentally sustainable.
• And we’re ensuring that people affected by mate wareware have spaces where dignity, compassion, and community are not just ideas, but realities.
Both Dementia Hawkes Bay and Dementia New Zealand are grateful to everyone who’s helped make this happen for our Hawkes Bay team – from funders to whānau, and everyone in between. These changes aren’t just about buildings. They’re about creating a future where everyone affected by dementia can live well in their community.
Let’s keep building, together.
