Strength in Movement: How a Hamilton Exercise Group is Changing Lives

In January 2025, a new initiative was launched in Hamilton to support people living with young onset dementia (YOD) to stay active, build confidence and connect with others.

The fortnightly exercise group was founded by Dan Popping, a volunteer personal trainer who had seen the benefits of movement for people living with dementia while working with a similar programme in Christchurch. After moving to Hamilton, he approached Dementia Waikato with the idea of starting a group – one that is now growing and establishing itself as a welcoming space for participants.

Dan describes the sessions as a mix of coordination-focused activities — like balancing a balloon on a pool noodle or modified volleyball games — followed by a structured circuit workout. The aim? To improve balance, mobility, and overall wellbeing while having fun.

“I love seeing the way movement can bring people together,” says Dan. “For those living with young onset dementia, it’s not just about fitness — it’s about having a space where they feel capable and connected.”

Although the group is still in its early stages, it is becoming a community. Attendance is steadily growing, and it is hoped that more people will benefit from the opportunity.

“We know that social connections can be harder to maintain after a diagnosis of young onset dementia,” says Janine Mair, Dementia Advisor at Dementia Waikato. “It is hoped that groups like this provide opportunities for connection.”

A Growing Need

It’s hoped the number of participants will grow steadily. While most attendees are local, some travel significant distances to take part. Dan and Janine would be open to potentially running additional sessions in the future.

Dan, who now works for London Green, is grateful for the support he’s received in making this initiative happen. “It’s a rewarding space to be involved in, and I’d love to see it grow.”

More Than Just Exercise

Young onset dementia presents unique challenges. Unlike older adults with dementia, many people in this group are still of working age, managing financial commitments, and navigating the complexities of a diagnosis that few expect in midlife. This can lead to isolation and a loss of confidence.

“This group is about more than just staying active — it’s about staying engaged in life,” says Janine. “We’re here to remind people that there are still opportunities for joy, movement, and friendship.”

As Dan puts it, “It’s rewarding to see people light up when they realise what they’re capable of. The goal is to keep them moving, keep them social, and most importantly, keep them smiling.”
