Young Leaders Step Up to Support Dementia
Earlier this month, students from the Hamilton Boys’ High School LEO Club hosted Cuppa for a Cause – a charity high tea raising awareness and funds for dementia | mate wareware. Held on Saturday, 5th April, the event welcomed members of the wider community, including residents from local retirement villages and rest homes.
The LEO Club (Leadership, Experience, Opportunity) is part of the Lions Clubs International movement, helping young people develop leadership skills through service to their communities. The club organises practical projects throughout the year, from food drives to environmental initiatives, and Cuppa for a Cause was their first dementia-focused event.
Senior Dementia Advisor Janine Appleby attended on behalf of Dementia Waikato, speaking to guests about dementia and the support available for individuals and whānau.
“It was a pleasure to be part of the day,” says Janine. “I was so impressed by the professionalism and care shown by all the students. Events like this not only raise funds but also start important conversations in our community.”
The afternoon included musical performances, kōrero, and a strong sense of community. Thanks to the efforts and energy of the LEO Club members, the event raised $365 — a contribution that will help Dementia Waikato continue delivering education programmes, resources, and support to families across the region.
We are deeply grateful to the Hamilton Boys’ High School LEO Club for their aroha, leadership, and commitment to making a difference.
