Everyday tools that may help at home

We often receive tips and tricks from care partners and whānau members about tools and items which help their loved ones maintain independence, reduce anxiety, or stay connected to daily routines.

One Aotearoa New Zealand provider is Memory Matters NZ, founded by Brendon Goble (who many of you may know through his support of Remember December). Memory Matters offers a range of practical products designed to support people living with dementia | mate wareware at home.

What kinds of tools are available?

Memory Matters focuses on simple, practical items that may assist with:
• Orientation to time and day
• Supporting routines
• Reducing confusion or agitation
• Encouraging independence in everyday tasks
• Providing meaningful engagement

These include dementia-friendly clocks and calendars, reminder tools, sensory items, and products designed to make daily living more manageable.

Many care partners tell us that small adjustments in the home environment can make a noticeable difference. What works for one person may not work for another, but having options can help whānau trial different approaches.

A note from us
Dementia New Zealand does not sell products and does not provide clinical endorsement of specific items. We share this information in response to questions from whānau about where to find practical tools.

If you’re considering a product, we encourage you to think about the individual’s stage of dementia, their preferences, and what may support their dignity and independence.
